Poetry Lesson: A New Kind of Lion

Will Small has been performing and teaching spoken word poetry in Australian schools for over a decade. His English honours thesis at the ANU was titled 'Slamming hip-hop in Secondary Schools: Rethinking the ways we teach poetry.' Will has also been a 2X national finalist at the Australian Poetry Slam and is the published author of All Things New and Poetic Beings.

For the first time, Will has created a teaching resource specifically for teachers, including a video lesson and accompanying worksheet designed to help inspire students and empower their own creative writing process.

The resource includes a highly engaging and professionally produced 10 minute video lesson and an accompanying PDF worksheet. The video and worksheet are designed to inspire students as well as walking them through a writing process and together can easily be used in a single school period.

• Examples of what a ‘poetic’ career can look like and why the skills of a poet can powerfully ‘make every word count.’
• A performance of one of Will’s most popular poems, ‘For Leo’ dealing with themes related to gender stereotypes, violence and positive manhood.
• A breakdown of how the poem was written and the poetic techniques it uses.
• 3 practical writing tips to help young people write their own poems (metaphors, writing style, repetition)
